Step 4: Adjust brake bias
Brakes
Brake Balance (Front/Rear)
“Adjust the balance of the front and rear brakes in real time. Increasing
effectiveness for the front wheels makes it easier to oversteer during braking
while cornering, while increasing effectiveness for the rear wheels makes it
easier to understeer.”
ATTENTION! The sentence above, highlighted in red, is from Polyphony,
it’s in the game, in the manual, and… IT’S WRONG!
It’s exactly the opposite:
More braking power FRONT = UNDERSTEER
More braking power REAR = OVERSTEER
There are two factors playing a role here, engine position and road
inclination.
It is extremely important to fully understand how weight and grip
moves from one tyre to the other.
Front engine RWD cars will tend to understeer while braking and oversteer
accelerating, Rear/Mid engine RWD cars will tend to oversteer while braking
and understeer accelerating. Plus if you drive downhill and brake, the car will
dive, moving the weight all the way to the front. Try to adjust Braking Bias
through the MFD while driving, when you need to brake downhill just move
braking power to the front, you’ll see the difference!
On the other hand, moving braking power to the rear helps FWD cars
turning, compensating understeer.
General Rule: FWD (3 to 5), 4WD (2 to 4), RWD front engine (-1 to -2),
RWD mid-rear engine (2 to 4), downhill (-5)
